Inventor, Patent Expert Is the First to Offer Free Do-It-Yourself Patent Course to Independent Inventors

Andrew Knight, J.D., a Registered Patent Agent and inventor of 28 patented or patent-pending inventions, is the first patent practitioner to offer a how-to-patent video course at no cost to inventors. The three-hour downloadable course aims to teach inventors how to write and submit their own provisional patent applications.

Princeton, New Jersey (PRWEB) February 11, 2008 - Andrew Knight, J.D., a Registered Patent Agent, graduate of MIT and Georgetown Law, inventor of 13 issued U.S. Patents and 15 pending patent applications, and prior math instructor at the University of Georgia, became the first patent practitioner to offer a free how-to course on writing provisional patent applications, called Do-It-Yourself Provisional Patent™.

The three-hour video course covers aspects of writing and filing a provisional patent application, including a basic overview of U.S. patent law, differences between provisional and nonprovisional patent applications, creating drawings, writing a thorough description, an introduction to claim drafting, completing forms, and a discussion of available options. The course uses an actual invention as an example to demonstrate how to write a patent application.

Several do-it-yourself patent guides or software products are currently available, such as David Pressman's Patent It Yourself™, PatentEase™ software by InventorPrise, Inc., PatentPro™ software by Kernel Creations, Ltd., PatentWizard™ software by Neustel Software, Inc., and The Patent Writer™ by Bob DeMatteis, Andy Gibbs, and Michael Neustel. None of these resources are free to inventors, ranging in price from $18.95 to $299. Further, until today, there did not exist a video course designed specifically to teach inventors how to write their own provisional patent applications.

When asked why Knight, an experienced Patent Agent who ordinarily charges $200 per hour to write patent applications, would teach inventors how to write their own provisional patent applications in a free downloadable course, he responded, "I just think that too many companies are trying to profit on inventor ignorance when it comes to provisional patents. Inventors can save so much in attorney's fees by writing their own applications." Knight adds that he sells a more advanced do-it-yourself patent course that teaches inventors how to write, submit, and prosecute their own nonprovisional patent applications.
